A GREEN GEMSTONE IN THE BAY OF PLENTY

Living in Kawerau

One of New Zealand’s best kept secrets

Kawerau is a town offering its residents life in the centre of the tourist heart of New Zealand. Lakes, forests, and beaches are all only short distances away.

This attractive town, with about 7500 inhabitants, is central to and within easy reach of the Bay of Plenty’s more glamorous playgrounds. Tauranga, is a mere one hour 10 minute drive away, Mt Maunganui and Papamoa with magnificent beaches, less that an hour. While tourist-orientated Rotorua, with its thermal wonders and lovely lakes, can be reached in 45 minutes by car, Whakatane is 30 minutes away, and Ohope Beach 35 minutes.

We have it all around us, plus lakes and rivers used for trout fishing and recreational sports even closer. Kawerau residents need not look to other places for all their fun. This is not a place to be ignored.

The well known forestry town, is set in the green heart of the Bay of Plenty, and has its own special qualities that make it an ideal place to live. It provides an affordable lifestyle option for those who want to dip into neighbouring scenic amenities, while taking time to enjoy the many magnificent facilities at their own backdoor.

The town is renowned for its mild winters and warm temperate Bay of Plenty climate. It is consistently one of the warmest places in New Zealand as TV weather temperature reports show.

Kawerau, with its attractive climate and varied scenic beauty, draws both younger and older people to its core. Low cost housing enables people to free-up the capital they have tied up in properties elsewhere. They simply have to sell a higher priced property in another part of the country and then purchase a home of equivalent quality for a fraction of the price in Kawerau.

Those facing their retirement years, who wish to maintain their quality of life, find Kawerau’s excellent climate and quality but low priced housing a real draw card. They can create substantial disposable or investment income by moving to Kawerau - and at the same time enjoy living in one of the country’s premium lifestyle locations.

Kawerau has a modern shopping centre and its recreational and community facilities are the envy of many larger towns. These include an attractive golf course in a picturesque setting, squash facilities, numerous sports grounds and playing fields, a centrally situated bowling green and a large sportsdrome catering for a number of indoor sports and activities. Also in the central town area are tennis and netball courts and a thermally heated swimming pool. More than 100 clubs provide for practically every community interest, and both sea and trout fishing are popular leisure past times.

The library, town hall and concert chambers are all available for community use. Health, medical and socials services are also well catered and churches for some 16 denominations are represented.

The cultural flavour of Kawerau is further enhanced by a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds where New Zealanders have been joined by immigrants from Finland, the Netherlands, Great Britain, North America and Australia, who came to work in the forestry industry. The people are friendly and there is a strong community spirit.

Kawerau has its fair share of scenic beauty. The locals love their well-kept gardens and reserves. In addition, Mt Putuaki (Mt Edgecumbe) provides a stunning backdrop and views. The charms of Tarawera Forest, Mt Tarawera, Lake Tarawera, crystal clear Tarawera River and unique Tarawera falls are situated close by.

Kawerau has (or has ready access to) a wealth of natural and human resources, The areas’s geothermal energy resources were the deciding factor when Kawerau was chosen as the location for the pulp and paper industry in the 1950's. Today the Kawerau borefield contains more than 25 bores, one of which is the largest producing bore in the world. Other local uses for geothermal steam include heating the local swimming pool.

The huge forests that border Kawerau incorporate the upper reaches of the Tarawera River and the Tarawera Falls. This areas’s scenery and recreational opportunities provide enjoyment for many thousands of people who regularly visit the forest to hunt, fish, canoe, climb, camp, orienteer, cycle, collect firewood, or walk and jog.

The availability of sawn and unsawn timber resources provides opportunities for the manufacture of a wide range of wood products and some by-products from the pulp and paper industry have the potential for further processing into marketable products, offering opportunities for entrepreneurs. Vast amounts of waste fibre and bark are available for agriculture or landscaping, while trade waste recycling also has much potential.
